Five on the First

“As the son of an architect, I inherited an attentiveness to spatial organization, aesthetic systems, and design logic. This perspective continues to shape both the visual language of my work and the questions that drive it. In these paintings, textiles serve as both subject and structure, where pattern, ornament, and image converge. Working primarily in oil paint, I am interested in the tension between the medium's material specificity—its seductiveness, opacity, and historical weight—and the illusions it makes possible. Drawing from stock photography, advertising, personal photographs, and invention, I construct hybrid images that reflect the flattened hierarchies and visual saturation of contemporary image culture. By mapping fabricated patterns across ambiguous textile-like surfaces, I interrupt illusion and draw attention to the ways images are constructed, circulated, and consumed. These synthetic environments blur fiction and fact, familiarity and estrangement, echoing the polished aesthetics of digital space while remaining grounded in the embodied labor of painting. Through this work, I examine how taste is conditioned, reproduced, and aestheticized within a globalized, algorithmically regulated visual culture. Painting becomes a way to reconsider both historical modes of visual persuasion—from still life to trompe l'œil—and the economies of attention, consumption, and desire that shape how we see.”
